Some disadvantages need a large capital investment, with time to market that can average 6-36 months to set up and the learning curve is a steep one.

Hybrid Cloud

The product is red hot in the IT market, and in many cases, hybrid clouds are the only answer, in which it is a blend of private cloud and public cloud service. Workloads of data move between the public and private clouds. The company can be large with thousands of representatives or small with just ten staff members.

 

For most businesses that migrate to the cloud and use the hybrid cloud model to manage some of their resources in their own data center. These are located remotely in the data center of various service providers. The benefit is to extend either the capacity or the capability of a cloud service by accumulation, consolidation or customization with other cloud services. When the public and private services touch each other, it then forms a hybrid cloud service.


Very large companies can not relocate their IT operations as a whole to the cloud. The IT costs sky-rocket and very few organizations can afford to keep their whole IT requirement on their premises. Put these two facts together and a migration to some form of hybrid cloud follows.

The business owner has five offices located in different States. Each office has its own Net-gear Software. The users at each office load and save locally. It is synched to the Cloud Server and from there to each of the other local office’s Net-gear software, where it enters Cloud Instance.

The test installation is in “The Cloud”. The business owner is running a cloud computing service that has a very good “Hybrid Cloud” capability. He is using “Vmware” and can create local file shares with user and group permissions, “VMWare” synchronizes the Cloud instance for the enterprise with all the permissions in order. The cloud based server or the local file share server can be accessed. Each user has a personal folder area that typically resides on their PC, that gets synched to their personal folder in the cloud.

Finally, yes, I do think there are many benefits if one decides to integrate the IT department to hybrid cloud. Enterprises still possess the IT department, which consists of the software and hardware and technical staff, but the Public cloud gets cheaper by the day. One can hire Software from public cloud for next to nothing which would normally be very expensive. Gone are the days where one needs licenses for every software program one owns and run into a brick wall if it is not kept updated.

  • The Second piece of the puzzle is the Private Cloud. This is far more complicated than the Public Cloud.

  • Choose the Private Cloud Server that will work the best for the business and pair it with the inter IT Department dedicated Server, Networking, hyper visor and management tools.

If there is an existing private cloud, simply deploy a hybrid cloud to be on top of the private cloud. If the development starts with a dedicated server, then simply deploy both the private cloud and hybrid cloud at the same time directly to the public cloud.

The employees have cell phones, pc's, laptops, tablets, TV's. Do you see the problem? You are on holiday and have your Apple laptop with you. There is a crisis in the human resources department, but with your Apple laptop you cannot connect to the HR department.

 

Wouldn't it be a lot more logical to keep all the information in the cloud. When you are on holiday with your Apple laptop, all that you need to do is to sign into the HR account, get into the database and solve the problem. If the data is highly confidential, just enter the second password and you are into the database.

 

The Cloud gives you freedom in space as well as freedom from location.

OwnCloud OS 8.1 is a free open source software. It is easy to operate and you can set-up your own syncing, Dropbox-like cloud storage system and you can do it on your own server or web site.

The Blue Print to get your own Private Cloud

 

First Step:

You will need a Raspberry Pi 2 which is about $42 if you buy from Amazon.com.

Second Step:

Download Raspberry pi image.

Instructions for installing OwnCloud on the OwnCloud Website.

 

Burn the Raspberry Pi image on the SD card. Raspberrypi.org has good guides for burning the image on other platforms.

Plug SD card into Raspberry Pi 2 along with power, internet ,monitor, mouse and keyboard.

Boot it up and follow these steps:

Login - Username : pi

Password : owncloud

 

Enter: raspi-config.

The configuration utilility will be launched as well as SD card will be expanded to use all space.

Reboot.

Are you using Wifi?

Enter: startx.

Launch the wifi utility to connect to wifi signal.

Enter: ifconfig

Note netmask and ipaddress of your connection.

Enter: sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces

Add type iniface home_static inet staticaddress – enter our ip address here.

Netmask – enter your netmask here

gateway – enter your default gateway here

 

For example:

address 192.168.0.53

netmask 255.255.255.0

gateway 192.168.0.1

 

Reboot your Raspberry Pi 2 .

 

Go to another computer

Start up the web browser.

Type in your Raspberry Pi's ipaddress, followed by owncloud.

For Example

http://192.168.0.1/owncloud

 

Third Step:

Nearly done!

So you would like to access your OwnCloud from any device and not necessarily from your home network.

Follow these steps:

Set up port forwarding on your home router. Tinkernut has a video on how to set up port forwarding on your home router (how to bypass a router).

 

For a Dropbox style cloud service : Use an old Laptop or an old computer. Install Owncloud and setup your private storage. Drag and drop your photos and files on the storage space.
